Building Services

Project 1: High-Rise Building at Taylor’s

In this project, we were instructed to research buildings of comparable type, height, uses, etc. in groups of five in order to comprehend the relevant building services systems applied. The group is expected to create a schematic design of a high-rise building, including the spaces connected to the building services' system (i.e. plant room, AHU room, and lift core), on various different types of services (mechanical transportation, mechanical ventilation, mechanical air-conditioning, active and passive fire protection), using our university's Block E as reference in terms of the plinth area, floor plan, and envelope design.

Following that, we were to compile our design diagrams, explanations and reasonings in an A3-sized report. It would contain the relevant plans, schematic diagrams, sectional diagrams, etc. (generated by each student responsible) to explain the proposed system and justify the selection of that particular system. The role of each system component, as well as why it was placed where it was, was to be described, along with illustrations pulled from prior research.

Project 2: Application of Building Services

This was an individual project to integrate fundamental building services systems into our fifth semester's design project. By suggesting and creating the most suitable systems for the building, students are expected to demonstrate their expertise of the following building services: domestic water supply, sewerage and sanitary system, drainage system, and electricity supply system, by applying it to their studio project, the Community Centre for the Creative City.
