SEMESTER PROJECT
Case Study: Shading and Lighting
This assignment was the sole project in my first short semester's only architecture module. For this project, I was required to work with my fellow team members to construct a presentation board on shading and lighting within a chosen space of our liking. We selected rooms in two of the team member's houses and collected data on-site and coupled it with research on how to improve these spaces to achieve maximum thermal comfort.
Reflection:
This single project was a great summation of everything we learnt in the semester - for the first time we gained a foothold on the environmental qualities of space and form. We learnt from a practical standpoint how to make our own homes more comfortable - by analyzing their current climate aspects (such as wind, sound, light and temperature) we could then put forth solutions to alleviate any extremities (such as installing shading devices, just to name one).
REFLECTION
In conclusion, this module helped me to:
Understand design with respect to the context of an external environment/climate
What measures can be taken to design an environmentally-friendly space with efficient use of energy
Improve my group working skills and how to split a project among multiple team members and to meet our respective deadlines
I thank my tutors (especially Dr Siti, my group tutor) for helping to coordinate our meetings properly and giving us feedback on how we could improve our work and what to do in creating a design that suits and contributes positively to a given environment.
